Our Methodology for Testing

We tested the wagon’s handling and flexibility by pushing, pulling, and dragging the wagon over different surfaces (tacky play mats, carpets, hardwood floors). We also used it with babies and toddlers of varying ages to see if they could comfortably sit in each seat.

It took a range of testers to figure out what made a seat comfortable for an infant or toddler: Some kids prefer sitting upright; others like to curl up. Some babies like to face forward; others prefer to face the side. And once kids know how to walk, there are so many ways they can try to escape that we had one parent use his 18-month-old as a crash test dummy.

We ran the wagons through their paces by pulling them across our test course, which included both flat roads (for electric models) and bumpy grass paths (for manual models), allowing us to evaluate how well each handled traction on different surfaces.

To figure out what made for a good radio set-up in the wagon, we took notes on volume quality, bass response, and overall clarity during testing. We also checked that all of the speakers were positioned correctly.

During testing with baby dolls, I measured maximum head clearance—the distance between the top of the seat back where an infant’s head would sit and the canopy—to see if any seats would accommodate even a long-torsoed newborn.

Here’s What We Have Found

The Convertible Stroll ’N Wagon is the most versatile wagon we tested. With a push handle that folds away and a wagon pull handle that folds down, it can be either pushed or pulled depending on what’s needed.

We also like that it can fold down flat (like a typical stroller) so it’s easier to stash in a small space, and it has the added bonus of a removable parent’s tray with two cup holders.

This wagon is sturdy and had the smoothest steering of the models we tested thanks to its front caster wheels. Our testers loved the roomy, extra-durable canopy, and the large, smooth-rolling rear wheels made it easy to pull the wagon over grass and gravel.

We also found its storage capacity—120 pounds of kids or cargo—to be the best of the wagons we tested. The Convertible Stroll ’N Wagon is easy to assemble and should be ready to go out of the box in under an hour. The weight capacity is 150 pounds, and it is recommended for kids ages 1 and up.

Radio Flyer 3-In-1 EZ Folding, Outdoor Collapsible Wagon

Here’s What We Have Found

The Radio Flyer 3-in-1 Deluxe wagon is the only choice we considered that could be configured in three different ways: hauling, two-kid seating, and bench seating.

This wagon was easy to fold, and its folded dimensions were compact enough to fit under a typical staircase. It was also one of the lightest wagons we tested, which made it easier for us to lift and pull it up stairs.

Its only drawback was that it lacked a seat belt, which meant parents had to hold on to their kids while using the wagon.

The Deluxe wagon has a 150-pound capacity, which should be more than enough for even the most adventurous outings. In addition to the standard features, we’d recommend picking up an extra canopy if you plan on using this wagon in the sun often.

We think the wagon is sturdy enough for most families; if you have concerns about the strength of the wagon, you can purchase a locking wheel kit, which we think is a worthwhile investment.

Here’s What We Have Found

The Quadrapoint 3-Spoke Hub Caps for 3/8-Inch Axles (Red) are the best option for most people because they’re a great deal, since you get four hubcaps for the price of one of the other competitors. If you have a different model of trike or wagon than the six we’ve listed here, these will still work—they’ll fit any metal 3/8-inch axle.

The Quadrapoints aren’t quite as sturdy or high-quality as the other options, so we don’t recommend them if you have a particularly hard-driving child. But if you’re looking for a great deal, these should work for you.

Still Confused? No Worries! Go Through These to Decide Better

In a quest to find the best wagon accessories, we evaluated hundreds of options across several criteria. Here’s what we looked for:

Stability

The most important quality of a wagon accessory is its ability to keep your child’s wagon from tipping over. We looked for accessories that had wide bases, and we preferred those with adjustable widths.

We also noted whether each accessory came with its own storage bag, which is helpful for keeping your car clean and for preventing your kid from playing with loose parts.

Durability

We wanted items that would withstand the wear and tear of kids using them—and the destructive tendencies of some kids! We looked for products made from metal or reinforced plastic, rather than plastic alone.

A good metal ring can last a lifetime if you treat it right; plastic rings tend to crack or break. Metal axles are also much stronger than plastic ones.
