How We Evaluated Each Product

We had a few guidelines in mind when we set out to find the best gaming accessories:

Budget: To keep things affordable, we limited our search to PC accessories that cost less than $50. Although some of the products we tested were more expensive, they all performed well enough that you could confidently buy them without worrying about getting ripped off.

Setup and Performance: We evaluated each product based on its setup process, any additional software or drivers required, and its performance during use.

Comfort: We used each product for several hours at a time to determine whether it was comfortable to use and how easy it was to adjust.

Features: We looked for any extra features that we might actually use or appreciate, such as different color options or volume-control knobs.

Compatibility: To make sure these accessories worked with most brands of headsets and controllers, we tested them with multiple sets from Astro Gaming (A50), Logitech (G533), Turtle Beach (Ear Force Stealth 600), Razer (Athena), Sennheiser (GSP 350), Creative Labs (Sound BlasterX H7 Tournament Edition), SteelSeries (H Wireless), Tritton (ENDURANCE COMPLEX COMPLEX ENDURANCE HENDURANCE COMPLEX COMPLEX ENDURANCE COMPLEX ENDURENDURENDUREENDUREENDUREENDUREENDUREENDUREENDUREEN COMPLEX COMPLEX ENDURANCE COMPLEX ENDURANCE COMPLEX ENDURAN COMPLEZEN COMPLEZEN zen zen zen zen zen zen zen UNI UNI UNI UNI UNI UNI UNI TQOwAwAwAwAwAwAwAwAwAwzA0Y0Y0Y0Y0Y0Y) headphones and the Razer Wildcat.[end footnote]

After testing the top contenders, we narrowed our list down to four products per category—headsets, controllers/mice/keyboards, desks/chairs, and headsets—to do an additional round of tests. During these tests, one member of the team would wear each headset while another would play games like Overwatch or The Division 2 for about 30 minutes. Afterward, everyone would provide feedback on how well each headset fit and how comfortable it was overall. For this round of testing, I wore the A20 headset myself; my colleague Dan Hinckley wore the Hyperx Cloud Stinger.[end footnote]

If you want to charge multiple devices at once and want easy access to your headphones, this dual headset hanger and charger from HORUMP should do the trick. It comes with a 5-port smart USB charger that can help you charge multiple devices at once, including your laptop or tablet.

The charger has a USB-C port and two USB-A ports, allowing you to charge most smartphones, tablets, and even smartwatches in addition to your laptop.

If you don’t need to charge your laptop (or you don’t have one), you can disable the dedicated USB-C port for other devices.

The smart USB charger is capable of detecting your device to deliver the fastest possible charge speed up to 2.4 amps per port or 4 amps overall.

It’s also easy to remove and reattach, thanks to the two screws and adhesive screws that come with the hanger. The screw option works best if you don’t plan on moving the hanger frequently, but the adhesive is great for permanently securing it to your desk.

The hanger should be able to hold up two sets of headphones, but if you have a lot of different devices to charge, you might want to remove the one of the headset arms to make room for other gear.

The arms on this hanger are detachable, so you can use the hanger to hold just one pair of headphones or other accessories.

If you find yourself needing support, HORUMP offers a lifetime warranty service, so you can get your gear replaced or fixed at no charge.

The Moojly Desk Riser has most of the features we’d want in a monitor stand, including a built-in USB hub, RGB lighting, and a drawer and mobile phone holder.

It’s also one of the most adjustable models we tested, able to accommodate monitors of up to 27 inches wide and to spread out nearly 3 feet across (using the widest span of its three support legs). The riser’s ergonomic design improves your posture and helps alleviate neck and back pain.

You can also fold the riser down to a more compact footprint, and the legs on both sides can rotate to fit a monitor of any width.

This model is sturdy and reliable, with a max load-bearing capacity of 46 pounds and a sturdy, fully enclosed structure. Moojly offers a one-year warranty on the riser, and the company has great customer service.

Things That Make It a Good Investment

The G920 Driving Force Racing Wheel for PS4, Xbox One, and PC has the most realistic force feedback of any wheel we tested, and its smooth, precise steering makes it easier to get around tight corners than other wheels we tried.

It’s compatible with all major racing games, including recent releases, and can also be used on PCs. The wheel itself is built like a tank, with ball bearings in the wheel shaft and stainless steel paddle shifters and pedals that should last for years.

The leather-wrapped wheel adds to the overall quality feel, and the wheel and pedal unit are securely mounted to a sturdy steel plate. The wheel also has a D-pad and console buttons on the spokes for easy access to controls, and the semi-automatic paddle shifters make changing gears in the heat of a race easier than with other wheels.

What to Look for Before the Purchase

A quick search for PC gaming accessories returns a seemingly endless list of products—from specialized mice and keyboards to game-specific controllers and headsets. We opted to focus on accessories that enhance your overall gaming experience, rather than those that add specific functionality.

Here’s what we looked for in each category:

Gaming Mouse

A gaming mouse should ideally have additional programmable buttons, adjustable DPI (dots per inch), and comfortable grips. It should also come with software so you can tweak its settings—preferably by assigning different DPI settings to each button.

We focused on mice designed specifically for PC games, ignoring more general-purpose ergonomic mice like the Logitech MX Hero.

Gaming Keyboard

A gaming keyboard should have customizable backlighting or key illumination; dedicated media keys; programmable macros; and multiple profiles, so you can switch between setups easily. It also shouldn’t make a lot of noise while you type.
