massage therapy

A full-body massage is an extremely relaxing experience. It’s so good, in fact, that many people fall asleep after one! Any type of massage therapy can have some very pleasant side effects, including reduced pain and pressure on the body, though some massage techniques are better at stimulating these benefits than others.

Types of massages:

There are many types of massage therapy, including trigger point therapy, myofascial release, acupressure massage, deep tissue massage, sports massage, Swedish massage, prenatal massage, and many more.

Suffice it to say that a massage of any type will give relief from stress, anxiety, sore muscles, and so on by forcing the body into a state of deep relaxation.

What massage technique is best for you? This question may be difficult to answer.  There are many types of massage therapy techniques, so in order to answer this question, we must specify massage techniques.

  • Trigger point massage is a technique that specifically targets areas of muscle tightness and pain, not the whole body like most massage techniques do.  Many people find this massage to be extremely therapeutic, especially when used in conjunction with physical therapy exercises. Using trigger point massage techniques helps break up the specific muscle group causing the pain, rather than simply massage away the soreness.
  • Swedish massage is one of the most popular massage techniques and the most commonly taught techniques in massage therapy schools.  It usually involves five basic strokes that are performed on both sides of the body: effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement, and vibration.
  • Myofascial release massage therapy is another massage technique best suited for people who are suffering from muscle spasms or pain in a specific area of the body. The goal of this massage is to massage away the pain, rather than massage away the spasms. The massage uses a lot of slow, concentrated strokes and a little pressure.
  • Acupressure massage therapy is an ancient massage technique that uses massage therapy on certain pressure points on the body, rather than massage therapy on the whole body. This massage is extremely relaxing and energizing at the same time. The fingers are used to apply pressure to several specific areas of the body in order to stimulate them so they can affect other organs by increasing blood flow and relieving congestion.
  • Deep tissue massage is one of the most therapeutic massage techniques, best used on people who are suffering from muscle spasms or pain in a specific area of the body. It uses very deep pressure applied to tense, knotted muscles.
