The Approach We Took for Testing
While the Mac is a well-designed computer, its accessories are where Apple has traditionally skimped. The best USB-A to USB-C dongles we tested were flimsy and prone to failure. We found that most of the available USB-C hubs don’t work as advertised.
We also tested Bluetooth keyboards, trackpads, and mouse pads but didn’t find any standouts.
For displays, we used each MacBook Pro connected to both a 4K display and a 5K display (where applicable) for at least several days, including hours of coding and general use. As with previous years, I ran our standard DisplayMate tests on the UHD and 5K systems as well
For external GPU testing I connected an eGPU enclosure with a Radeon RX 580 GPU inside it directly to the Mac mini via HDMI, then ran tests including GeekBench, Unigine Heaven, Tomb Raider (2013), Star Wars Battlefront II multiplayer beta (for macOS compatibility), and more.
tomtoc 360 Protective Laptop Shoulder Bag for 16-inch MacBook Pro
What We Think About This
Overall, the A42 Series from A42nch has the greatest variety of carrying configurations of any of the laptop bags we tested and is one of the most protective, thanks to its CornerArmor technology.
It’s also the most spacious, with two interior pockets and a spacious main compartment that’s big enough to hold a 16-inch laptop, a tablet, a charger, and accessories.
The A42nch’s soft, cushy, and water-resistant fabric and high-resilience protective edges—which should help prevent more serious damage in the event of a serious spill or drop—made it feel the most comfortable to carry, too.
We found this bag most effective at keeping our stuff organized, thanks to a zippered pocket on the front of the bag (for items you frequently need to access), a zippered pocket on the side of the bag (for items you don’t need to access frequently), and a spacious main compartment (for items you don’t need to access at all).

The OLYMPUS USB-C Hub for Macbook Pro 14/16 Inch (M1 Pro/Max), model M-2010047, is the best choice if you need to connect multiple devices to your MacBook Pro.
The OLYMPUS USB-C Hub for Macbook Pro 14/16 Inch (M1 Pro/Max), model M-2010047, is the best choice if you need to connect multiple devices to your MacBook Pro. It provides a place to plug in a charger while also offering a total of four ports, including two USB 3.0 ports, an Ethernet jack, and a 3.5mm audio jack.
It is simple to connect to your laptop, and it supports PD3.0 charging, so you can use it to power your laptop or other devices. The USB-C Hub for Macbook Pro 14/16 Inch (M1 Pro/Max), model M-2010047, is affordable, compact, and sleek-looking, and it’s the only USB-C hub we tested that meets Apple’s stringent standards.
It’s also the only one that we’ve tested that has been certified as Apple-approved.
The MacBook Pro’s built-in USB-C ports don’t support 40Gbps Thunderbolt data transfers, but the OLYMPUS USB-C Hub for Macbook Pro 14/16 Inch (M1 Pro/Max), model M-2010047, does, and it also supports 40Gbps Thunderbolt video.
A Thunderbolt 4-capable cable is required to achieve the full 40Gbps data transfer. If you don’t have a Thunderbolt 4-capable cable, it’s not a big deal; this hub will still provide full USB-C data transfers with a standard USB-C cable.
Our testers found that the OLYMPUS USB-C Hub for Macbook Pro 14/16 Inch (M1 Pro/Max), model M-2010047, was the easiest to connect and use. It’s small, sleek, and sturdy, and it’s just big enough to fit the Thunderbolt port on a MacBook Pro. It’s also the only hub we tested that you can use with the MacBook Pro’s Mag Safe 3 port.
In fact, you should still use the Mag Safe 3 port to
SUPCASE Unicorn Beetle Series Case for MacBook Pro 16 Inch (2021 Release)
What We Think About This
The Unicorn Beetle Pro is our favorite MacBook Pro 16-inch case for extra rugged protection. It’s constructed with a sturdy, shock-absorbing wraparound bumper that should provide more protection than any other case we tested.
The clear, hard-plastic case cover keeps the Apple logo on your MacBook Pro 16-inch visible and lets you show off your Mac’s sleek design.
The case provides easy access to all ports, sensors, speakers, cameras, and all other functions, and the precise cutouts and design help prevent dust and debris from accumulating.
The bottom corners are raised and feature a raised, rubbery material to help disburse heat away from the bottom of your laptop. We’ve tested this model, the Unicorn Beetle Pro (our top pick since 2016), and its predecessor, the Unicorn Beetle (our top pick from 2015 through 2018), extensively, and we’ve found them to be the most protective cases we’ve tested.
They’ve withstood numerous, repeated high-speed drops from 5 and 12 feet onto multiple surfaces with little to no damage, and our team of experts has found that the bumpers for both designs offer more protection than the other cases we’ve tested.
UPPERCASE GhostBlanket Screen Keyboard Imprint Protection
What We Think About This
The GhostBlanket is the best screen protector we’ve ever tested, thanks to its unique, 0.4mm-thick microfiber material that’s laser-cut to fit the shape of the laptop screen.
It’s also a pleasure to use thanks to its soft, smooth texture that doesn’t attract dust and other particles.
Even after a year of weekly use, we found no fuzz or fraying along the edges. We’ve never had a screen protector stick to our fingers quite like this one does. However, if you value a uniform, clear look over all-out functionality, you might prefer the other screen protectors we tested, which are clear and don’t leave any microfiber fuzz.

The Macbook Pro 14 Dust Plug Set from Smead is the best option for the newest Macbook Pro 14 and Macbook Pro 16 inch (2019 Released Model A2442 A2485 M1 Pro/ M1 Max Chip with Touch ID) that are equipped with an M1 chip.
The other models of Macbook will not fit this dust plug set. The set contains 7 different type dust plugs, and they’re perfect for your Macbook Pro 14 inch and Macbook Pro 16 inch.
The dust plug also keep steady when moving your Macbook. It will protect your Macbook Pro HDMI, Thunderbolt 4, SDXC, Charger Port & Headphone Jack ports.
The dust plug will keep out dust, moisture, scratches, or other tiny objects. And the high quality silicone material ensure that the dust plug will not be deformed after long-term use.
The only downside is that it can be difficult to remove and replace the dust plugs.
Considerations Before Making a Purchase
Here’s what we looked for in our search:
A lot of people use their notebooks as desktop replacements, and having more ports means you can get everything hooked up without moving things around every time you want to charge a device or transfer data.
We favored docks with USB-C ports along with regular USB-A ports. We also preferred those that included power passthrough so you don’t have to shut down your laptop every time you need to charge a device.
Easy To Set Up
The setup process should be simple, and the dock shouldn’t require any software installation or additional downloads—everything should work right out of the box.
Compatibility With MacOS
Docks often need firmware updates before they work with a new macOS release. A dock shouldn’t require significant upgrades—and if it does, that’s a red flag—but compatibility with the latest operating system is always important.
