The Approach We Took for Testing

We used a set of four cases with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: two plastic cases (an ultra-slim model from Spigen and an impact-resistant model from UAG), one leather/microfiber hybrid case (from Incipio), and one waterproof case (from Catalyst).

We then added a few more cases to our lineup, including some rugged models that were popular with Amazon shoppers.

During testing, we placed each phone in a case and subjected it to several everyday stress tests—including texting, taking photos, using the touchscreen and apps, pulling out the headphone jack, plugging in the power cord, charging the battery, removing SIM cards, connecting wired headphones or audio cables—as well as outdoor activities like hiking or camping.

Things That Make It a Good Investment

Our favorite screen protector for the iPhone 7, 8, and X is the one from TALK WORKS. It’s made of tempered glass instead of plastic, and it’s less than half the thickness of other screen protectors.

Because it’s made of glass, the screen protector is sturdy enough to resist scuffs, smudges, and cracks, and it has a 99.9% transparency. The only thing you’ll notice is a slight dimming from the thickness of the glass (which doesn’t interfere with the touchscreen).

This screen protector doesn’t offer the same level of impact protection as other models, which tend to be thicker and offer more scratch resistance. However, we’ve never had a problem with this glass screen protector cracking, and any small scratches from keys or pocket change should be easier to clean off of a glass surface.

The screen protector comes with a dust removal sticker and a cleaning cloth, and it’s one of the easiest screen protectors to install—it’s thin enough that it shouldn’t cause any bubbles.

Also, like other glass screen protectors, it’s case-compatible and doesn’t interfere with the Apple Watch charging dock.

The amFilm Tempered Glass Screen Protector for iPhone 8 and 7 (2-Pack) offers everything we look for in great glass screen protectors: It’s ultrachrome, ultra-clear, and robust, with a 99.9 percent transparency rating.

It’s also incredibly thin at 0.3 millimeters thick, so it doesn’t add any bulk to your phone. The screen protector is rated 9H for hardness, so it can withstand scrapes and scratches, and it’s also fingerprint-resistant thanks to an oleophobic coating.

In addition to two screen protectors, the amFilm kit comes with a card of cleaning wipes, a squeegee for smoothing out bubbles, and multiple dust-removal stickers.

Bebetter 8-pin Charging Dock Station

Things That Make It a Good Investment

The Bebetter 8-Pin Charging Dock is one of the best-designed iPhone docks we’ve tested. It’s slim and sturdy, and it has ports for USB-C, Lightning, and Micro-USB cables—so it’ll work for almost any smartphone you own.

It also has an extra-strong cable clamp and a built-in fan to help keep your phone from overheating. The fan is quiet and unobtrusive, and it doesn’t interfere with audio playback.

You can use this dock either with a wall adapter or USB-C power from your computer, but it doesn’t transmit sound.

Apple MFi Certified Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter

Things That Make It a Good Investment

The Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter is the best option if you want to use your favorite headphones with your iPhone or iPad. It’s one of the least expensive Apple-branded accessories, ensuring a secure connection between your devices, and it comes in a small form factor that should be able to fit in your laptop bag or pocket.

It supports the latest iOS versions, and it works with a wide range of Apple devices, including the Apple Pencil and some third-party accessories. It’s a simple, no-frills accessory—it doesn’t offer advanced functionality, such as support for multiple audio sources like Bluetooth does.

IPOW Anti-Slip Silicone Car Phone Dashboard Pad Mat

We’ve tested plenty of car-phone holders, and the IPOW Anti-Slip Silicone Car Phone Dashboard Pad Mat is our favorite. This simple, straightforward design is sturdy, takes up little space, and is easy to set up.

It’s made of tough, sticky silicone that can accommodate multiple sizes and styles of phones. The IPOW’s non-slip surface reliably keeps phones in place, no matter the type of road you’re driving on.

The IPOW’s simple design doesn’t have a long arm that could block your view, magnets, suction cups, clamps, or folds, which makes it easy to store and travel with.

Still Confused? No Worries! Go Through These to Decide Better

We researched hundreds of iPhone 7 cases and accessories ahead of the phone’s release, and we’ve continued to look at new products released since. We took note of the following features when selecting contenders:

Cases With Good Proximity/Lightning Cutouts

The most important thing for a case to do is protect your phone, so it should have good edge and corner protection.

Some cases also include cutouts for the iPhone’s sensors, which allow you to access things like Touch ID or the flashlight without having to take off the case. (A good case should have cutouts for all necessary features.)

We dismissed any cases that had poor-quality cutouts that led to reduced functionality with the phone in the case.

Bluetooth Headphones That Sound Decent

While testing headphones, we looked for ones that sounded decent, had long battery life, were easy to use, and cost less than $150—and preferably cost less than $100.
