Our Methodology for Testing

We bought another round of cases to test: folios, clear cases, bumper cases, and durable-case combos. We also ran the same tests on the same phones as before, using them to take photos of food in a Brooklyn apartment and to send texts outdoors.

We also asked Wirecutter staff members to try out cases they’d received recently and had been using on their phones.

No one on our staff is a professional photographer, but we all need our phones for taking pictures almost every day—of kids, meals, pets, projects around the house, and more.

We used each case for at least a week before giving it back.

During those weeks we took notes about how easy or difficult it was to install and remove each case (and its accompanying screen protector) multiple times; whether the case added too much bulk; how much exposure the phone’s corners had; how easy it was to accidentally swipe an app closed or press an edge too hard into the screen; and so on.

Afterward we measured each case’s thickness with calipers.

What We Think About This

The Ailun Screen Protector for iPhone 13 Pro Max 6.7 Inch Tempered Glass Film is a great choice for anyone who prizes clarity and ease of installation over everything else.

It’s a simple sheet of glass that will keep your screen free of scratches and smudges. It does not reduce the screen’s sensitivity to touch and is easy to install.

It’s the only screen protector we tested that we would actually recommend, thanks to its clarity and resistance to smudges.

It’s also one of the cheapest screen protectors we tested.

What We Think About This

Our top pick is the Ferilinso Tempered Glass 3 Pack. The included glass sheets are thinner than those of other models (which makes them easier to install) and offer full coverage of the camera lens.

Unlike most glass protectors, the Ferilinso glass has rounded edges, so it should never get stuck in a case. In our tests, it was also the easiest to install—and if there is a mess-up, it’s the only protector we’ve found that comes with a cleaning kit.

Our testers found that it was also the easiest to install, and if there’s a mess-up, it’s the only protector we’ve found that comes with a cleaning kit. In our experience, the company’s customer service is also reliable.

ESR Air Armor Case

What We Think About This

The ESR Air Armor’s design and materials make it one of our favorite cases. Its Air-Guard corners use advanced foam technology to cushion the impact of drops, so you don’t have to worry about your phone.

The case is also tough—it has a hard back, a flexible frame, and Air-Guard corners. After testing, we found that it offers military-grade protection with a high probability of surviving a serious fall.

The crystal-clear hard back maintains the original look and feel of your phone and resists yellowing, unlike other cases we tested.

The raised screen edges and camera guard help protect against scratches to the screen and camera. The case is also thin enough to allow wireless charging, and it’s one of the least expensive cases we tested.

This screen protector is 99.99% transparent and has a smooth surface that’s 99.99% scratch-proof, so it should be nearly invisible to the naked eye. It’s also rated 9H hardness, so it should be able to survive most small drops and bumps.

What We Think About This

If you own an iPhone 14 Plus or an iPhone 13 Pro Max, you likely have a case, which means you’ll need a screen protector that’s case-friendly. The Spigen Tempered Glass Screen Protector is our top pick because it’s sturdy yet easy to apply, and it has all the features we look for in a screen protector, including an oleophobic coating to prevent fingerprints and a beveled edge that mimics the curvature of the iPhone’s screen.

It’s also made to fit every Spigen iPhone 14 Plus / iPhone 13 Pro Max case. We tested this screen protector with all of the cases we tested in our guide, and we were able to install it successfully every time.

What to Look for Before the Purchase

We focused on accessories that made it easier to use your phone in different situations, whether that’s by providing better protection or by helping you to listen to music or make a call when you’re away from the nearest charger. Here’s the criteria we used:

Portability

The accessory should be small and lightweight enough that you don’t mind carrying it with you, either in a pocket or in a bag.

We considered stand-type accessories to be portable, since they can sit on a desk or table while you work, but some of those are so large they aren’t really portable.

Useful Features

A good iPhone accessory should have features that make it easier to use your phone. For example, we liked cases with tactile button covers because they give you physical feedback when pressing the buttons on the sides of an iPhone.

We also looked for cases with openings for buttons and ports—such as for the speaker, microphone, and Lightning port—so that usability isn’t restricted.
