The Best Accessories for Your HomeKit Setup

HomeKit is Apple’s smart-home platform, and it’s what you use to control your HomeKit-compatible devices—from light switches to thermostats to door locks—with Siri or a tap of the iPhone app Home. Over the past year, we’ve tested dozens of accessories, and these are the ones we recommend for most people.

How We Evaluated Each Product

When we began our testing, we set up three HomeKit devices: a smart plug, an outlet switch, and a dimmer switch. To start out, we installed the accessories in a standard two-bedroom apartment in New York City.

During the installation process for each accessory, we noted any difficulties with the included documentation or required tools.

Lutron Caséta Deluxe Smart Dimmer Switch (2 Count) Kit

What We Think About This

The Lutron Caséta Smart Dimmer 2-Pack Kit with Smart Hub is the most fully featured smart lighting kit we tested, and it offers more control options than any other smart lighting system. It lets you create scenes, timers, and schedules to automate your lights and lets you control them with your smartphone, a wall switch, the Caséta app, or a Pico remote.

This kit has more built-in integrations with smart home devices than any other smart lighting kit, and it works with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It’s also the only smart lighting kit we tested that works with Apple HomeKit, so it can be controlled by the Apple Home app, the Apple TV Remote, or via Siri commands.

In addition to basic dimming, Caséta offers “smart” dimming, which it calls Smart Away, that randomly turns your lights on and off to make your home look occupied even when you’re away. You can also use this smart dimming to create custom schedules and scenes, and the Caséta Smart Hub is the only smart lighting hub we tested that doesn’t rely on your Wi-Fi to work.

The Caséta system is also the only smart lighting system we tested that’s fully functional even without Wi-Fi, so you don’t need to reset your schedules and scenes or reconnect everything once your Wi-Fi comes back online.

If you want to add more fixtures or bulbs, this kit is the most affordable way to do so. It’s also the easiest smart lighting kit to install, as it works with standard dimmer switches, doesn’t require any extra wiring, and doesn’t require a neutral wire.

We recommend the Caséta dimmer switch 2-pack because it offers the same features and benefits as the Caséta dimmer switch kit at a lower price than buying the kit separately.

Eve Button – Apple HomeKit Smart Home Remote

What We Think About This

The Eve Button is a smart, Apple HomeKit-compatible remote that you can use to control accessories and scenes (like “Good Morning” or “I’m Leaving”) without your iPhone. It’s a lot like the Elgato Eve Button, but it offers three distinct actions—a single press, a double press, and a long press—that you can customize via the Eve app.

It’s also smaller and more portable than the Elgato so it’s easier to take with you. The Eve Button works with Apple TVs running tvOS11 or iPads running iOS 11 or higher that are set up as a home hub. If those devices aren’t an option for you, we still think the Elgato Eve Button is a fine choice, but it has some drawbacks.

It’s bigger and bulkier than the Eve Button, it doesn’t offer multiple actions, and it’s dependent on an Apple device.

Eve Cam – Apple HomeKit Smart Home Secure Indoor Camera

 Mounting Dream TV Wall Mount

What We Think About This

The Eve Cam HomeKit Secure Indoor Video Camera (2019 Version) is the most capable indoor camera we’ve found for monitoring a single location.

Like all HomeKit cameras, it’s designed to work exclusively with Apple’s Home app and Siri. The video is of high enough quality that you can easily distinguish faces and pets, and the motion detection is accurate.

You can view a live stream and recorded video directly on your iPhone or iPad, or you can use the Eve Cam app on your Apple TV or iPad to view the video on your TV screen.

The camera is equipped with a 90-degree field of view, so you don’t need to pan or zoom the video to see everything that’s happening. You can change the field of view to 180 degrees, though we found that the wider angle distorts the image.

The camera’s biggest downside is that it’s a little expensive, and we suspect you won’t be able to cover the cost with your savings from cutting cable.

The Eve Cam works with several third-party integrations, including Amazon Alexa and Nest thermostats, but it doesn’t have the same level of integration as the other cameras we tested.

It does work with Apple’s HomeKit, which means you can control this camera using Siri or the Home app on your iPhone or iPad.

If you have an Apple TV or iPad, you can view video from the camera on your TV screen.

The camera also has strong security, encrypting all video and audio communication and requiring a dedicated HomeKit Secure Video camera or iPad to access it.

If you’d like to save some money, you can activate the privacy mode to turn off the camera when somebody is home, and you can use motion detection to automatically record events that happen in front of the camera.

Eve Motion – Apple HomeKit Smart Home Motion Sensor

What We Think About This

The Eve Motion is the simplest smart motion sensor you can use to trigger accessories and scenes in your smart home. It’s one of the most reliable sensors we’ve tested, and it offers more functionality than most—it can detect your presence, and it can send you notifications when it detects movement.

And because it’s HomeKit-enabled, it offers unparalleled ease of use, advanced security, and the ability to use voice commands and create scenes and automations with other HomeKit accessories.

The Eve Motion is also the most secure smart motion sensor, because it doesn’t have a cloud-based service, so your data stays private. The only downside is that the Eve Motion doesn’t use the Thread protocol, so it can’t connect to other smart devices that use that standard, such as smart locks.

Eve Door & Window – Apple HomeKit Smart Home Wireless Contact Sensor

What We Think About This

The Eve Door & Window Sensor 3 Pack is a great option for monitoring the status of a door or window, and it will inform you when something has triggered it. Its sleek and discreet design makes it an ideal choice if you’re trying to keep the look of your home minimalistic.

The Eve sensor can also send you notifications when it detects an activity, like if someone opens your door or window. And it can trigger other HomeKit accessories, like a smart bulb or a security alarm, to activate as well.

The Eve sensor works with Apple’s Home app, as well as with all other HomeKit-compatible third-party apps, and it’ll connect with your HomeKit accessories automatically when you first set it up.

The Eve Door & Window Sensor 3 Pack is the best option if you have multiple HomeKit accessories to connect, since it can connect over Bluetooth and Thread, which is Apple’s smart-home networking protocol. (The company also sells a version of this sensor that works with Zigbee devices, if you have those in your home.)

This sensor is also one of the more affordable options that we tested, and unlike the other sensors we looked at, it doesn’t require a hub or gateway—it just works with your HomeKit accessories and your iPhone or iPad.

Considerations Before Making a Purchase

We focused on accessories that were simple to set up and use, had useful and appealing features, and were easy to recommend overall.

We looked for accessories with the following:

Multi-Platform Support

HomeKit works with iOS and tvOS devices, so we prioritized accessories that support both platforms. In some cases, this requirement disqualified otherwise excellent options if they lacked a companion Android app.

If an accessory has a companion app for Android or another platform, we noted that in our tests. And although most HomeKit accessories work with Google Assistant now (the integration is still rolling out), we didn’t consider a HomeKit accessory to have multi-platform support unless it also had an Android app.

Indoor/Outdoor Use

Accessories such as lighting systems, outlets, and fans can be used both indoors and outdoors. We prioritized those that were weatherproof and could be used in any setting.
